A new chapter begins at Victoria Park as early works start for Brisbane Stadium

From Monday 1 June 2026, Queenslanders will start to see changes at Victoria Park as the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) takes possession of the park and begins initial works for the new Brisbane Stadium.
This marks an important milestone in the delivery of these venues and the beginning of a new chapter for Victoria Park, as work gets underway to prepare the site for construction.
After hosting the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics at the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Brisbane Stadium will become the city’s main stadium for sports and entertainment, with 63,000 seats and a concert capacity of up to 70,000.
Work underway as delivery progresses
Delivery of the new Brisbane Stadium is on schedule, with initial works getting underway from 1 June. Design work is progressing strongly, the Early Contractor Involvement process is in full swing, and an Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act referral was deemed “not a controlled action” in May, meaning no further Commonwealth environmental approvals are required for the precinct.
Contract award for the Stadium early works is scheduled for coming months, with bulk earthworks set to commence from late 2026 to early 2027.
The initial works from June will focus on preparing the site for construction, including ongoing investigations, early enabling works, demolition of some existing infrastructure and establishing construction areas on the Herston side of the park.
Over the coming weeks, visitors will begin to see more activity on site as these works get underway.

What's changing at Victoria Park
As works begins, some changes to traffic and transport are required to ensure the safety of visitors and workers.
From 1 June, parts of the park on the Herston side will be closed, with construction areas fenced. Key changes include:
- Closure of access points from the Herston and Kelvin Grove busway stations
- Closure of Gilchrist Avenue to public vehicles
- A minor re-route of the North Brisbane Bikeway
- Temporary traffic management and signage to support safe movement around the area
The popular Pump Track, York’s Hollow North Brisbane Bikeway and some greenspace will remain open to the public.
