All the dirt on site investigations

Site investigations site in Victoria Park

Venues and Villages

Site investigations help us understand the lay of the land and what lies beneath. Specialists like engineers, surveyors and geologists will provide critical information to guide decisions on the location, orientation, and design of the 17 venues we are building and upgrading for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games venues.

These specialists work hand in hand with environmental scientists, ecologists, cultural heritage experts and archaeologists, to ensure planning and design work in harmony with the unique ecological and cultural assets of our future venue sites.

What do site investigations include?

‘Site investigations’ is a very broad term which captures a variety of investigative techniques.

Most people consider geotechnical engineering (what lies beneath) to be the foundation of site investigations. In reality, plenty of site investigation activities extend above ground as well.

Activities may include:

  • Borehole drilling and seismic survey works

  • Creating test pits for contamination investigations

  • Identifying and mapping underground utility services

  • Flora and fauna surveys

  • Cultural heritage surveys and monitoring

  • Other non-intrusive investigations including topographical surveys

What sort of work is involved?

Different site investigations require different works. Geotechnical investigations like borehole drilling, seismic survey works and contamination tests are about understanding sediment and the ground’s suitability for development. Modern equipment is used to drill bore holes or create test pits in various locations, and while the large machinery might be hard to miss, this work is minimally invasive on the landscape.

Other types of work that may be undertaken include assessment of environmental features like flora and fauna; consultation with cultural knowledge holders including walking on Country and desktop research to better understand a location’s cultural heritage; or using simple equipment like site levels to survey topography.

How do site investigations address culture and heritage?

Consultation with historians and Statutory Aboriginal Parties form part of site investigations. A thorough acknowledgement and understanding of a site's past sets us up for success in planning  the location, orientation and design of venues.

Any work on site will always be very closely monitored by experts with an Archaeological Management Plan to guide the work of archaeologists who support design and construction teams to assess any interesting or unexpected finds.

How long do site investigations take?

As a part of the early works phase, site investigations generally take place over a period of several months, but this work delivers critical insights which inform many years of planning and project delivery phases.

What kind of impact will this have?

For most people, there will be no impact when site investigations take place. Signage and fencing will be in place around any machinery and drilling sites, and contractors undertaking work will be guided by relevant plans to minimise disruption to surrounding areas.

Ultimately, the start of site investigation works provides a visual and exciting reminder for Queenslanders that we are building momentum in delivering a transformational legacy for the Games, but more importantly, for generations to come.
