Rockhampton Flatwater Facility
Overview
Rockhampton’s Flatwater Facility on the Fitzroy River is proposed to be upgraded to enable the region to host rowing, Para rowing, canoe sprint, and Para canoe events at the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, while delivering a legacy for future generations.
The Fitzroy River is already a vital training and competition venue for flatwater sports, supporting school state championships, local regattas, and national team camps. Planned upgrades may include enhanced permanent infrastructure and amenities, expanding opportunities for grassroots sport and community participation across the region.
Hosting Games flatwater events in Rockhampton will inspire local athletes, boost the regional economy, and ensure the benefits of the Games are shared by communities across the state.
Currently in the Planning and Approvals Phase, GIICA is undertaking a feasibility and options assessment before the project moves towards the Project Validation Report for funding approval. Early investigative works underway throughout late 2025 include the exploration of river flow, water levels, wind, weather, and initial field of play suitability to align with International Federation and Games standards.
