In short

Rockhampton is set to play a key role in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with a proposed flatwater venue on the Fitzroy River — and the community is invited to help shape its future.

Plans for Rockhampton include upgrades to the existing Fitzroy River course to support rowing and Para rowing, as well as canoe sprint and Para canoe events for the Games.

These improvements would help bring the venue up to international competition standards while delivering long-term benefits for the Central Queensland community.

The proposed enhancements would also build on the site’s current role as a hub for school championships, regattas and national training camps — creating opportunities to grow participation and attract future events to the region.

GIICA will be at the Rocky Show on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 June 2026, sharing project information and inviting visitors to complete a short survey to provide feedback. The survey will run from Thursday 11 June to 11.59pm on Tuesday 30 June 2026.

Example survey questions will include:

  • What should be the top priorities for improving the precinct?
  • What long-term role should the facility play for Rockhampton after the Games?
  • What do you value most about Fitzroy River and surrounding area?
  • What benefits do you think upgrades could provide for Rockhampton and the region?

Community feedback will play an important role in shaping early project planning to ensure the development delivers lasting value for the region.
