In short

The exciting next stage of early works on the new Brisbane Stadium will be undertaken by Queensland born-and-bred BMD Constructions.

BMD’s early works program will include bulk earthworks as well as erosion and sediment controls, haul roads, semi-permanent fencing, stormwater drains, retaining walls and establishment of a logistics plaza.

The Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) undertook a comprehensive two-phase open market procurement process to select the early works contractor, including an Invitation for Prequalification (IFP) which received 22 responses, followed by an Invitation to Offer (ITO) in accordance with approved Procurement and Evaluation Plan.

BMD — a family-owned company founded in Queensland in 1979 before growing to become one of Australia’s leading integrated engineering, construction and urban development businesses — will provide a program of work that represents value for money and supports jobs and investment in Queensland.

The stadium early works are due for completion by the middle of 2027.

GIICA took possession of Victoria Park on 1 June to commence work on the site including initial site establishment activities on the Herston side of the site including the installation of temporary fencing, changes to traffic and transport routes, ongoing site investigations and survey work, and the repurposing of some existing buildings into site facilities and offices.

Delivery of the stadium ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games remains firmly on schedule. Design work continues to progress, the Early Contractor Involvement process is in full swing to identify the final builder, and an Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) referral was deemed “not a controlled action” in May, meaning the Victoria Park precinct does not require any further Commonwealth environmental assessments or approvals.

The new Brisbane Stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics at the 2032 Games, before becoming the city’s main stadium in legacy mode with 63,000 seats and a concert capacity of 70,000.

The new stadium will be a fitting home ground for current AFL Premiers the Brisbane Lions, and cricket’s Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash, Queensland Bulls at interstate level, as well as an outstanding international cricket venue for Tests, one dayers and T20s.

GIICA CEO Simon Crooks said: “The awarding of the early works contract for Brisbane Stadium represents another major milestone on our critical construction pathway.

“I am particularly pleased to be announcing our first early works contract is with proud Queensland company BMD.

“I look forward to working closely with BMD on our Games journey, creating Queensland jobs and building an extraordinary legacy with the new Brisbane Stadium in Victoria Park.

“We will see plenty of activity in Victoria Park in the months ahead as GIICA works with BMD to forge ahead with our program of work.”

BMD Group CEO Scott Power said: “As a Queensland-founded, family-owned business, BMD is proud to deliver the Brisbane Stadium early works.

“For more than 45 years, our people have helped deliver the infrastructure, places and connections that support Queensland’s growth, and we will bring that experience to start this legacy project.

“We understand the responsibility that comes with working in a place that means so much to so many Queenslanders. Our focus is on working closely with GIICA, the broader project team and the community, drawing on our local workforce, supply chain and civil construction experience to deliver the works with care and a commitment to positive long-term outcomes.”

Both located in Victoria Park; the new Brisbane Stadium and National Aquatic Centre are part of the $7.1 billion Games Venues Infrastructure Program jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.
