Fitzroy River course endorsed following independent technical assessment
World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide have endorsed the Fitzroy River flatwater course following a comprehensive and independent technical assessment, marking an important milestone in planning for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games venue.
The Fitzroy River flatwater course has been endorsed by international sport federations, World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide, following a comprehensive and independent technical assessment commissioned by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA).
The assessment, undertaken by internationally recognised marine engineering experts WaterProof Marine Consultancy and Services B.V, included:
- surveys of the riverbed and competition course
- analysis of river flows, water levels and Fitzroy Barrage operations
- assessment of wind, weather and environmental conditions during the proposed Games period, and
- on-water testing and modelling to evaluate flow, wind and wave conditions across a range of scenarios.
After reviewing the assessment findings and conducting site visits, World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide endorsed the course, confirming it can provide a safe, fair and consistent field of play suitable for rowing, Para rowing, canoe sprint and Para canoe events.
GIICA Chairman Stephen Conry AM said the endorsement was an important milestone in the planning process.
“GIICA is working collaboratively with Brisbane 2032 and the International Federations, while continuing validation assessments addressing venue requirements, design, risk mitigation and legacy outcomes,” Mr Conry said.
“The legacy benefits of the Games go well beyond 2032 with venues such as the Fitzroy River Flatwater Facility unlocking many long-term economic and social benefits for Rockhampton and Central Queensland.”
The endorsement represents an important milestone in planning for the Rockhampton Flatwater Facility. GIICA will continue its validation assessments to inform future venue planning, design, risk mitigation and legacy outcomes.
The Fitzroy River is already a training and competition venue for flatwater sports, supporting school state championships, local regattas, and national team training camps. Proposed upgrades to the existing course, including new and upgraded infrastructure and amenities, will expand opportunities for grassroots sport and community participation across the region.
Hosting Games flatwater events in Rockhampton will inspire local athletes, boost the regional economy, and ensure the benefits of the Games are shared by communities across the state.
