The growing Cairns community will have better sports and spectator facilities at a ground ready for national and international matches thanks to major upgrades at Barlow Park in Cairns.
There will be a new western grandstand with permanent seating for 5,000, including 1,500 retractable seats. There will also be improvements to athlete, corporate broadcast and spectator facilities.
The upgrade will benefit a range of sporting groups with Barlow Park home to local rugby league, rugby union, athletics, school and junior sport as well as Meals on Wheels. It is a well-utilised, multi-sport venue offering a premium rectangular pitch and the only International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) standard all-weather athletics track in Cairns and the Far North Queensland region.
Games use:
Barlow Park has been identified as a host venue for the football preliminaries and will have a temporary Games spectator capacity of 20,000 seats, including 15,000 temporary seats.
